Dynamic Support for Computer Mediated Intercultural Communication

This work focuses on communication problems related to transactivity — the extent to which messages in a conversation build on one another in appropriate ways. The proposed work extends the historical approach to intercultural communication problems by (1) identifying and categorizing the types of problems that arise in intercultural dialogues and delineating how these problems impact subjective and objective group outcomes; (2) applying machine learning techniques to coded dialogues with the aim of automatically recognizing when problems arise (or could arise) in an intercultural conversation; and (3) developing and testing interventions to improve intercultural communication that could be triggered by this automatic analysis.
